Canon Announces EOS 1000D or Rebel XS
By Tyler | June 10, 2008
Canon has announced the EOS 1000D, a new entry-level DSLR that slots into the model lineup beneath the 450D. The 10 megapixel digital camera, known as the Digital Rebel XS in the US, takes many of the new features of its big brother and presents them in a lighter, less expensive format that Canon hopes will re-shape the market in the same way as the first Rebel (300D) did. No word yet from Canon US about their intentions.
It will be interesting to see how this camera fairs when dpreview can get a review out to the public. The front of the body looks similar to the 40D but the rear of the body still holds true to the EOS Rebel form. Sporting the DIGIC III processor is a nice bonus. I personally would like to get my hands on this new Canon camera, if canon would only send me one to play with!

dpreview Reviews the Sony Alpha DSLR-A350
By Tyler | June 6, 2008
Our review of the Sony Alpha 350. The A350 shows a much greater Sony influence than its Konica-Minolta-based predecessor, the A100. Its radical live view system uses a secondary sensor to provide a real-time preview image without slowing down the shooting process, promising the speed and quality of a DSLR with the familiar behavior of a compact. So what’s the biggest of the baby Alphas like to use and can it live up to that promise?

SanDisk Releases News About Solid-State Drives
By Tyler | June 4, 2008
The newest in digital electronic storage is Solid-State Drives or SSDs. Think of them like compact flash cards with a larger storage capacity with quite read/write access. In fact you can order your Apple Macbook Air with a 64Gb SSD instead of a mechanical driven IDE hard drive. Though with SanDisk offering low cost Solid-State drives for Low-Cost PCs perhaps we might even seem them in high-end digital SLRs in the future?
Imagine using your Nikon dSLR or Canon dSLR with a 64Gb SSD instead of a removable memory card? That would be insanely cool!
From the SanDisk Press Release:
SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) today introduced a line of flash memory-based solid-state drives (SSDs) that are designed for an emerging new category of portable consumer electronics – called Ultra Low-Cost PCs (ULCPC) or “netbooks” – that allow users to have an enhanced experience while easily surfing the Internet using wireless communication. The SanDisk® pSSD™ (Parallel ATA solid state drive) eliminates the need for a hard disk drive and can store both the operating system and application data for these new devices.
A pioneer in developing SSDs for laptop computers, tablet PCs and blade servers, SanDisk is making the new SSD modules available in 4-, 8- and 16-gigabyte (GB)1 capacities, with a streaming read speed of 39 megabytes per second (MB/s)2 and a streaming write performance of 17MB/s.2 Supporting both Linux and Microsoft® Windows® XP operating systems, SanDisk pSSD solid state drives are being shown this week at Computex Taipei, where SanDisk is exhibiting at Booth M320 in Nangang Exhibition Hall.
SanDisk’s pSSD solid state drives, which are expected to be available starting in August, are built using the company’s reliable Multi-Level Cell (MLC) and Single-Level Cell (SLC) flash memory. This technology is produced at fabrication plants in Yokkaichi, Japan, where SanDisk and its partner, Toshiba Corporation, share the output. The two companies have co-developed many of the designs and technologies in NAND flash.
